What’s the best way to approach my boss for a raise?

“I’m just not making enough money in my current job. I want to stay in my current position. But, I want to ask for a raise, yet I’m unsure of the best way to approach my boss. Help!”

No doubt, asking for a raise is scary business. The thought of being rejected is even worse. Start the process by first analyzing the relationship you have with your boss. The best approach would probably be indicative of the relationship you have with your superior. Here are a couple rules of thumb to consider:

If the relationship with your boss is more casual, mention your intentions in passing and schedule a meeting to talk further at a later time. If the relationship with your boss [or direct supervisor] is more professional, and maybe your boss is not easily approachable, an internal memo or email would likely work best. State your request for a pay raise, including supporting details why you deserve the bump in pay … or if you prefer asking in-person, simply request a meeting time in the memo so you can later provide a full presentation on why you deserve a raise.
