When should I leave education off my resume?

Yes, there are rare instances when leaving education off your resume is the best technique to securing more viable job opportunities. Ideally, education is intended to benefit your overall job search and career goals, but there are certain instances when education can be a hindrance — maybe you have too much, too little, or its the wrong kind. =]

Reason #1 to possibly exclude education from your resume:

Let’s say a person who holds dual master’s degrees might find hiring companies less responsive for job openings requiring only a bachelor’s degree. Certainly there are times when jobseekers have “too much” education. Ideally, a jobseeker should pursue positions worthy or in line with their education, but that’s not always possible.

Reason #2 to possibly exclude education from your resume:

Another example for leaving off certain education, an industry-specific certificate for example, are sometimes necessary when the jobseeker is eyeing certain industries and doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into just one.

This scenario comes into play when an individual has a certificate that is very, very specific; i.e. a certificate in music business. This type of industry-focused certificate becomes irrelevant to a multitude of other industries, so jobseekers would be wise to examine and possibly exclude such academic items from their resume.
